Care and service

How often each AC brand wants a service

And what skipping it does to the warranty — Voltas, Daikin, LG, Blue Star, Samsung, Hitachi.

Every AC maker's warranty says something about maintenance, and most people never read it. It matters most in the one year that counts: the one where the compressor fails and the first question is how the machine was looked after.

We read the warranty pages of six brands sold widely in India — each maker's own page, on the date in the sources below. Here is what each says about servicing, and what it says happens without it.

Six brands, at a glance

BrandHow often, per its pageWithout it
LGRegular maintenance "at least every 3 months".Damage from improper maintenance or lack of maintenance is not covered.
DaikinTwo preventive check-ups in the first 12 months, free, on your request. The warranty is void if the compressor fails for lack of proper preventive maintenance.
HitachiNo interval stated. Its five-year scheme needs the AC installed or inspected by the company in the first 90 days after purchase. The scheme is void for neglect, among other causes.
Blue StarNo interval stated.Defects caused by improper handling, usage or maintenance are excluded.
SamsungNo interval stated.Defects caused by customer negligence void the warranty.
VoltasNo interval stated.Cleaning the unit of accumulated dust is not treated as a defect.

Only two say a number

LG's warranty terms ask for regular maintenance at least every three months, and exclude damage from a lack of it. Daikin offers two preventive check-ups in the first twelve months, free and on request — cleaning, an internal check, the air filter, lubrication — and says its warranty is void if the compressor fails for lack of proper preventive maintenance.

The other four state no interval on their warranty pages. That is not the same as not caring: each ties its warranty to the machine being looked after, in its own words — improper maintenance, negligence, neglect. Hitachi's five-year scheme adds a condition of its own, an installation or inspection by the company in the first 90 days after purchase.

No stated interval is not the same as no maintenance needed.

The long warranty is the compressor

The warranty on the whole machine is short — twelve months on each of these pages. The long years are on the compressor alone. On five of the six pages it runs ten years in all on an inverter model and five on a fixed-speed one, counting the first year; Hitachi offers ten on select models, as a limited-period offer. On several pages that long part covers the compressor and nothing else: Daikin, LG and Voltas each say the gas, the labour or the other parts are paid for separately, and Samsung calls its compressor warranty "only part warranty".

That is why maintenance matters most there. It is the part with the longest promise, the most expensive to replace, and the one each page protects with a maintenance condition.

What to do about it

  • Read the card that came in the box. Schemes change with the season; the card is what applies to yours.
  • Use the free check-ups where the maker offers them. Daikin's are on request, so ask.
  • Keep a record of every service — the date, who came, what was done. If the maintenance question is ever asked, that record is the answer.
  • Use authorised service during the warranty. Several pages void the warranty for work by anyone else.

In HomeButlr

Your AC's care steps come with their own reminders. Log each service on its page — the kind of service, who paid, the parts replaced — and the history is there when anyone asks.

Brand and product names belong to their owners. HomeButlr is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or an authorised service provider for any brand named here. Warranty terms are quoted from the maker's published India pages on the date shown and may change; the maker's current terms prevail.
