The RO purifier's real running cost

Filters, membranes, and what the AMC does and does not cover.

The price of an RO purifier is the smallest part of what it costs. The rest is spread over years, in parts that are meant to wear out: the filters that catch what is in the water, and the membrane that does the purifying. Nobody writes the replacement dates down, which is how a purifier ends up running on a filter that gave up months ago.

What wears out

A sediment filter catches dirt and dust, and in doing so protects the membrane downstream. A carbon filter takes out chlorine and other contaminants. The RO membrane does the main work, and the filters before it decide how long it lasts: KENT notes that when a filter is not changed on time, the dirt reaches the membrane.1

Two makers, two schedules

We read what two makers say about changing them. They do not agree, and that is itself the useful part.

Sediment and carbon filtersCarbon at least once a yearEvery 6–12 months
RO membrane—Every two years

From KENT's and Livpure's own guides.1,2 A dash means that guide gives no interval for that part.

Your purifier's schedule is in its own manual, not in anyone's average.

What sets the pace

Livpure ties its intervals to the water itself — its guide gives them "depending on the quality and quantity of water" — and names a high TDS level as one cause of a filter or membrane that stops working.2,3 Two homes with the same purifier can need filters at very different times. The manual for your model, and the technician who has seen your water, are better guides than any table — including this one.

What the AMC covers

An annual maintenance contract is where most of the running cost is decided, and what it includes varies by maker and by plan. Eureka Forbes lists annual filter replacement, service visits and spare parts on its Aquaguard AMC page, each "based on plan", with one to three visits a year depending on the plan.4 Livpure's own guide warns that an AMC may not include the RO membrane and carbon filters, and advises making sure those terms are in it.3

Before you sign one

  • Which filters, and how many times a year? "Filter replacement" can mean one filter once.
  • Is the membrane included? It is the part most likely to be left out.
  • How many visits, and are repair visits counted separately from maintenance visits?
  • The start and end dates, so the renewal does not lapse between two services.

In HomeButlr

The purifier's care steps come with their own reminders. Add the AMC to its page with its dates, and you are reminded before it runs out; log each filter change as a service, with the parts replaced.

Brand and product names belong to their owners. HomeButlr is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or an authorised service provider for any brand named here. Warranty terms are quoted from the maker's published India pages on the date shown and may change; the maker's current terms prevail.
